Two letters from Andrew Kingsbury in Hartford to Seth P. Beers in Litchfield, CT, written 12 January 1826 and 8 August 1826.

January letter explains that there are no new entrees in the Small Journal, while the August letter discusses mutual acquaintances such as Col. Granes, Mr. Hillhallse, and J.M. Brown.

Biographical / Historical

Andrew Kingsbury (1759-1837) was the son of Phebe French Kingsbury and Ephraim Kingsbury. He enlisted as a private soldier in 1776, and in 1781 he became clerk in the office of Ralph Pomeroy, Esq., Deputy Quartermaster-General. Kingsbury married Mary Osborn on 14 January 1783 had and had five children. He was appointed Comptroller of Public Accounts in 1791, serving until 1793, and was then elected Treasurer of the State of Connecticut. Kingsbury remained in that office until 1818.

Seth Preston Beers (1781-1863) was the first child of Josiah Beers and Elizabeth Preston Beers. Beers attended the Litchfield Law School in 1803 and was admitted to the bar in 1805. Besides his legal profession, Beers pursued an active political career within the state. From 1820 to 1825, he served as the state's attorney. From 1820 to 1823, Beers was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives where he served as the clerk in 1821 and as the speaker of the house in 1823.

After a term in the Connecticut Senate in 1824, Beers spent the next twenty-five years as the commissioner of the Connecticut School Fund. He was the first president of the Litchfield County Historical and Antiquarian Society, the predecessor to the Litchfield Historical Society.
